By 2050 the worlds' coral reefs will be under critical threat-level based on current projections of the usage, particularly driven by tourism. In order to address this problem the Reef World Foundation is providing education and tools to tour operators in an online fashion, allowing to break away from grant-driven activities and to quickly get a global coverage and impact.
SUSTAINABLY THINKING STUDENTS
Sustainably thinking and motivated students is exactly what is required right now in order to further develop solutions and scale its implementation to keep more coral reefs to dissappear or to enter into the threat levels. Inspriing people and tourists for more marine conservation.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
The Reef-World Foundation is a UK registered charity with its roots founded on bringing basic marine ecology to fishing villages and local communities in Thailand since 1999. Today we are operating across the globe supporting governments and communities to sustainably develop their coastal resources. Our main role is internationally managing the Green Fins initiative, in collaboration with UN Environment, that focusses on environmentally friendly SCUBA diving and snorkelling practices in tropical locations.
Our mission at the Reef World Foundation is to inspire and empower people to protect and sustainably use coral reefs and other coastal marine ecosystems. If we don’t act and the situation goes unchanged, it’s estimated that by 2050 we are going to have all coral reefs under threat level with 75% at critical threat level. One avenue we’re exploring to try and reduce this gap is a new, paid for Green Fins system. This would be an online tool that would help guide tourism operators towards better practice and also provide a selection of business incentives. This would help us break away from the traditional boom and bust cycle of needing to get grants and help secure the sustainability of Green Fins while also scaling its impact to a global level. One of the reasons we’re really excited to work with TELANTO is because these students are bringing their enthusiasm and their skills to try and solve real-world problems. That is exactly what we need to try and scale up this solution and really help inspire people to protect risk in the long run. Therefore, we are really excited to bridge this gap between business and conservation to find a new way forward for marine conservation.
