Summary

In dem Seminar “Praxisfälle des industriellen Produktions- und Dienstleistungsmanagements” bearbeiten studentische Teams komplexe Aufgabenstellungen und entwickeln Lösungen unter Verwendung von state-of-the-art Optimierungs- und Analysemethoden.

Die Umsetzung der entwickelten Lösungen erfolgt in gängigen Softwarewerkzeugen. Vorgehen und Ergebnisse werden abschließend dokumentiert, präsentiert und diskutiert.

Der Teamarbeit ist ein Block bestehend aus Vorlesungs- und Übungseinheiten vorangestellt, in dem Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens vermittelt werden und ein praxisorientierter Einstieg in die Arbeit mit Optimierungssoftware gegeben wird.

The TU Berlin is a member of TU9, an incorporated society of the largest and most notable German institutes of technology and of the Top Industrial Managers for Europe network, which allows for student exchanges between leading engineering schools. It belongs to the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research.The TU Berlin is home of two innovation centers designated by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

The university is known for its highly ranked engineering programmes, especially in mechanical engineering and engineering management. The university alumni and professor list include US National Academies members, two National Medal of Science laureates and ten Nobel Prize winners.

The university is notable for having been the first to offer the now very popular course Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen (which the institute itself translates as Industrial Engineering and Management). The university had conceptualised the course as a response to demands by industrialists to offer a course that provides their offspring with the technical and management expertise to run a company. First offered in winter term 1926/27 it is the oldest and one of the most prestigious programmes of its kind.

Objectives

Studierenden sollen die Fähigkeit entwicklen, aktuelle Fragestellungen des Produktions- und Dienstleistungsmanagements im Team zu erforschen, zu präsentieren und kritisch zu hinterfragen. Auf der Basis eines gegebenen Rahmenarbeitsplans lernen sie geeignete methodische Ansatzpunkte in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur zu identifizieren und diese problemadäquat weiterzuentwickeln. Unter Verwendung der in Forschung und Praxis verbreiteten Optimierungssysteme können sie eigenständig Programmierarbeiten leisten und sachgerechte Problemlösungen entwickeln.

In vergangenen Semestern wurden u.a. folgende Ergebnisse erzielt:
– Studie zu Potenzialen einer integrierten Losgrößen- und Reihenfolgeplanung (Nahrungsmittelindustrie)
– Studie zu Potenzialen einer energieorientierten Produktionsplanung (Automobilindustrie)
– Konzeption und Management von Produkt-Service-Systemen (Automobilindustrie)
– Entwicklung eines Vorschlags für die Integration einer neuen Produktionsanlage (Chemieindustrie)
– Konzeptionelle Entwicklung eines Assistenzsystems zur Ablaufplanung in der Batch-Produktion (Chemieindustrie)

Interested challenge sponsors should be:

Your information around challenges, collaboration and outputs is kept strictly confidential. While we use your company information and most likely logo and/or trademarks to present you to the academic partners, no third-party, which is not directly involved in the collaboration will never be granted access to sensitive information. As part of the Terms of use, all students agree to the confidentiality clause, when they log in to the network for the first time. Some of our clients choose to address confidentiality in a separate document.

I need to have certainty about any Intellectual and Industrial Rights originating from a collaboration!

The standard Terms & Conditions as well as the Terms of Use foresee, that students cede their IP-rights in favour of the company, when the company contributes to the resolution of the challenges, in terms of providing non-publicly available information, research, analysis, etc. and contribute otherwise with internal resources. How does the engagement model and collaboration work?

Our role-based platform structures and standardises the process in a simple and intuitive manner with a number of key interaction points, such as the kick-off, mid-term touch points and final presentation. The figure below illustrates the process with the three key roles, being the Challenge Sponsor (CS), Professor and the Student.

Is there any academic supervision of the students working on my challenges?

All collaborations promoted on the Academic Business Network are part of curricular or academically supervised extracurricular activities. For the greater part of the collaborations the challenges are worked on as part of the academic program of a specific course in a bachelor, master or MBA degree, so students performance is in direct correlation to the achievement of course credits and grades.

What is the typical collaboration period with teams of students?

Average collaboration periods take 75 days from kick-off to final presentation. New intense formats with shorter periods are currently experimented with to understand the quality and validity of potential solution outputs.

How much of my time is required to make a collaboration successful?

Half an hour every five to ten days are the standard reports we get from our customers in the higher satisfaction percentiles. Most of the time is required in the preparation, alignment and initial collaboration phase of the challenges.

Do I need to be at the university at some point in time during the engagement?
