This master’s degree in Big Data Management, Technologies and Analytics provides an overview of the Big Data ecosystem and an in-depth examination of both aspects: management (Big Data Management) and exploitation of data (Big Data Analytics), while providing applicability and a business vision within this world.

The UPC School of Professional & Executive Development offers a wide selection of lifelong training courses with over 200 yearly master’s degrees, postgraduate courses and specialization courses with a professional outreach, adapted to the current economic and social, business and professional needs.

UPC’s lifelong training at a postgraduate level has been designed to broaden the competencies of professionals in the fields of Architecture, Urbanism and Building Construction, Civil and Industrial Engineering, Business Management and Administration; Sustainability and the Enviroment, and Information and communication Technologies.

The courses are top quality, supported by research and knowledge transfer at the UPC and by the collaboration with over 300 companies that participate in the training courses. Since 1994, over 80,000 professionals have found a boost to their careers with these programmes.

The programmes offered make it possible to expand technical learning in each of the technological specialities and make available the necessary tools and knowledge to learn new personal skills in the spheres of project management, administration and leadership. Our goal is to help future managers in the fields of engineering, innovation and technology to learn the ideal knowledge and to develop the necessary skills and capacities to take on responsibility for the new competencies required by the professional market.

Objectives

– Identifying the most important characteristics in Big Data management which govern the choice of an architectural solution.
– Understanding the open data paradigm.
– Practising with the main Big Data management tools currently on the market (Hadoop, MongoDB, Neo4J, Spark, etc.).
– Understanding when a business problem can be formalized as a machine learning problem.
– Identifying the statistical or machine learning models that are most suitable for a given problem.
– Being able to perform pre-processing of data.
– Being able to evaluate the success rate of the proposed models.
– Acquiring specific knowledge about the use of Big Data for decision-making in business.
– Identifying best practices in the application of Big Data when creating a business.
– Using business modelling tools.
– Understanding the economic, ethical and legal principles of the operation of a business.

Solutions

The project in the Postgrade on Big Data Management and Analytics of UPCSchool “Tourist Factory” by Beatriz Martín, Juan Pablo López, Yulia Zvyagelskaya i Rodica Fazakas won the 2016 Big Data Talent Awards of Barcelona Big Data Center of Excelence. Another project of the same postgrade by Albert Quiroga, Ferran Cabezas, Xavier Mas i Carles Teixidó was finalist (http://www.essi.upc.edu/dtim/news/57f641228de2d80b12eddb7d).

The project SmartCityAlert, developed by students Carles Maggi, Jesús Llevadias and José Manuel Reche from the postgraduate in Big Data Management & Analytics at UPC School was a finalist in 2015 in the category of “Best MSc or Postgraduate Project” at the Big Data Talent Awards, organized as part of the Big Data Congress celebrated in Barcelona (http://www.essi.upc.edu/dtim/news/56700cf562201bf30d56ed8c).

Methods

We combine lectures, teamworks, exercises, etc. In general, the course is very practical-oriented. The learning method is presential, with the aid of a virtual campus. The presential sessions starts at Oct. 9th, finishig at July 13th. Then, until Oct. 5th, the teams for the final project work with the assistance of their tutors.

Instantly, you will become and serve as a partner in promoting solutions by offering invaluable rapid feedback to students that collaborate with you as problem solvers based on your real-world experience and deep expertise.

To be more specific, as a digital challenge sponsor you bring context, real insights and data of a particular area to the table. You clarify, frame, and pitch your challenges prior to exploring solutions with your student teams.

Your collaboration efforts, will help student teams become thought after problem solvers with applied skill sets that will lead to better solutions overall.

Suggestions

Interested challenge sponsors should be:

  • Subject matter experts in the field they are applying for, assuring a smooth collaboration with the responsible faculty and student teams.
  • Committed to a collaboration over a period of 12 weeks.
  • Available to spend approx. 10h in total to collaborate with the student teams.

What about confidentiality?

Your information around challenges, collaboration and outputs is kept strictly confidential. While we use your company information and most likely logo and/or trademarks to present you to the academic partners, no third-party, which is not directly involved in the collaboration will never be granted access to sensitive information. As part of the Terms of use, all students agree to the confidentiality clause, when they log in to the network for the first time. Some of our clients choose to address confidentiality in a separate document.

I need to have certainty about any Intellectual and Industrial Rights originating from a collaboration!

The standard Terms & Conditions as well as the Terms of Use foresee, that students cede their IP-rights in favour of the company, when the company contributes to the resolution of the challenges, in terms of providing non-publicly available information, research, analysis, etc. and contribute otherwise with internal resources. How does the engagement model and collaboration work?

Our role-based platform structures and standardises the process in a simple and intuitive manner with a number of key interaction points, such as the kick-off, mid-term touch points and final presentation. The figure below illustrates the process with the three key roles, being the Challenge Sponsor (CS), Professor and the Student.

Is there any academic supervision of the students working on my challenges?

All collaborations promoted on the Academic Business Network are part of curricular or academically supervised extracurricular activities. For the greater part of the collaborations the challenges are worked on as part of the academic program of a specific course in a bachelor, master or MBA degree, so students performance is in direct correlation to the achievement of course credits and grades.

What is the typical collaboration period with teams of students?

Average collaboration periods take 75 days from kick-off to final presentation. New intense formats with shorter periods are currently experimented with to understand the quality and validity of potential solution outputs.

How much of my time is required to make a collaboration successful?

Half an hour every five to ten days are the standard reports we get from our customers in the higher satisfaction percentiles. Most of the time is required in the preparation, alignment and initial collaboration phase of the challenges.

Do I need to be at the university at some point in time during the engagement?
